Having a blog which attract visitors to your website can often bring many business opportunities. Blogs can drive traffic, generate leads and increase sales.
In this article I’ll talk about how you can create a blog to attract visitors to your business website.
What’s a blog and why is it important?
A blog is a type of website or a webpage that is regularly updated with content, usually written in informal or conversational style.You may have heard about celebrity blogs or news blogs, but blogs can be about anything. A blog can be anything from a personal blog to a corporate blog of an international organization.
It all depends on the reasons behind blogging:
- someone may create a blog out of passion,
- someone will try to earn money with blogging, and
- a business may start a blog as a part of their content marketing strategy – to connect with their customers.
Many blogs provide commentary on a particular subject or topic, ranging from politics to sports. Others function as more personal online diaries, and others function more as online brand advertising of a particular individual or company.
What does a blog include?
A typical blog combines text, digital images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. The ability of readers to leave publicly viewable comments, and interact with other commenters, is an important contribution to the popularity of many blogs.
In this article, I’ll talk about creating a business blog. The goal of a business blog is to bring targeted traffic to the website and to establish a two-way communication between an organization and its audience (customers).
If you look at the statistics, it seems that everybody’s blogging. According to this data for 2016, 6.7 million people blog on blogging sites and 12 million people blog via social media networks (Facebook posts etc.).It’s also important to note that companies that blog regularly (at least once a week), have a 126% increase in lead generation.
HubSpot found out that Companies that published 16+ blog posts per month got almost 3.5X more traffic than companies that published 0-4 monthly posts.
In the same study, they also found out that companies that published 16+ blog posts per month got about 4.5X more leads than companies that published between 0 – 4 monthly posts.In other words, companies that make a commitment to regularly publishing high-quality content will see an increase in website traffic and leads.
Steps you need to take to create a blog for your business
If you’re thinking of creating a website and a blog, take a look at the steps you need to take.If you already have a website you can incorporate the blog easily into it, so skip to Step 3.

1.Choose your blogging platform
Before you start blogging you have to choose a blogging platform. Although there are many platforms to choose from out there (Joomla, Drupal, Tumbler etc), WordPress is usually the best choice for most bloggers.
Over 72 million active users are using WordPress. Around 30% of all sites on the internet run on WordPress. Those are some impressive numbers.
People choose WordPress because it is:
- Easy to set up
- Highly customizable
While other platforms are generally ok, they don’t come near WordPress in terms of usability and customization options.
2.Choose a domain name and set up hosting
Registering a domain name and getting a web hosting is the part that probably takes the longest – but not because it’s hard, but because of the fact that you first have to come up with a name for your blog.
Let me explain two terms:
- Domain name is the name of your website. For example, www.Google.com or www.mytraveladventures.com
- Web hosting is the home of your blog, so to speak. It’s a web server that stores all the data you publish on your blog (text, pictures etc.) and enables you to use your domain name.
There are many hosting providers out there, so choose one and register your blog with it. First you need to register your domain name, and then choose a web host. This is all it takes to create a blog.
3.Develop content strategy
Now that you have your blog set up, it’s time to come up with content strategy. What you need to do is think about what do you want to say and to whom (to what audience).
Begin by developing personas for your audience. Your entire audience (all the people who visit your website) is not the same – some people are looking to get information, others are looking to buy. Your end goal may be sales, but it’s important to understand in which part of customer journey your personas are, so you can craft content specifically for them.
After you’ve created personas, make an editorial calendar. In other words, plan what you will write and when (and if you more than one writer, who will write what).Finally, choose the format of your content (blog posts, infographics, webinars etc.)
4.Create and promote your content
After you’ve developed your strategy, it’s time to start implementing it. Start creating content and keep an eye out on the deadlines from editorial calendar.
After you create some blog posts, it’s time to promote them.Choose through which channels you will promote them (it may be best to start with 2-3 channels) and measure the results after some time. Optimize and repeat.
